🌊
Saut des Cuves — Waterfall Walk
Hike · ~1 km · Easy

The most accessible waterfall near Gérardmer — the Vologne River tumbles dramatically over large granite boulders. Just a short walk from the car park, with charming stone footbridges and forest paths. The perfect quick waterfall fix even for the very youngest.

Tip: Watch young children near the river — some sections drop steeply to the water without barriers. Sturdy shoes recommended as paths can be slippery on rocks.
🫏
Saut de la Bourrique — "Jump of the Donkey"
Hike · 3.9 km · Easy

A lovely out-and-back trail through pine forest to a beautiful waterfall along the Phény stream. The path crosses many charming old stone bridges and is rated easy on AllTrails. Named after a donkey who saved its lord from a crusade — a great legend to tell the kids on the way!

Tip: Park at Col de Sapois. Good hiking shoes essential — rocky and muddy in April. Picnic tables at the waterfall. The loop return path has been closed since 2024, so do it out-and-back.
💧
Cascade de Mérelle & Chanony Waterfall
Hike · ~4 km · Moderate

A forest trail along the Mérelle stream passing two pretty waterfalls in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. Relatively short but can be muddy near the stream. Optionally combine with the Mérelle Observatory tower for a panoramic 360° view of the lake from the top (85 steps!).

Tip: Waterproof hiking shoes strongly recommended. The tower at the top is a highlight — kids love climbing the spiral staircase for the view over the lake.
🏞️
Tour du Lac de Gérardmer
Hike · 5 km · Easy

Walk the full loop around the largest natural lake in the Vosges — flat, scenic and family-friendly. The wooded southern shore is the most beautiful, with lake views, picnic spots and beaches along the way. A perfect first-morning walk to get your bearings.

Tip: Not suitable for strollers — rocky and rooty on the wooded side. Start left (wooded side first) so you finish with the easy lakefront promenade back into town.
